The sun was setting over the horizon, painting the landscape that fell before the wall shades of purples and oranges, washing the last few hours of light with warmth. You stand on one spot, admiring the dying moments of the afternoon that gave way to the dim evening. Hearing footsteps behind you, you turned, seeing a short, black-haired man walk towards you.

“Oh, hey there, Levi,” you greeted, looking at the items he carried in his hand. “What’cha got there?”

“That’s Lance Corporal Levi to you,” Levi corrected, as he did every time you said his name. He didn’t mind it too much when you said his name without his rank, but he wouldn’t admit it directly. You were both just playing along to an unnecessary routine.

Your mouth made an ‘o’ as you looked in interest at the wineskin in his hand. “Hey, what’s in there?” you asked, grinning. You had long finished the wineskin of water you had prepared at the start of your shift.

“Tea, but be careful, idiot; it’s still a little hot,” Levi warned, handing a wineskin to you. Taking a grateful gulp, you pulled a face.

“Feels weird drinking tea from a wineskin,” you said, taking another sip. “But it still tastes so good. Why’d you bring tea?”

“Erwin told me to get you something,” Levi answered, sipping from his own wineskin. You smiled.

“Aw, that’s nice of him,” you commented. “What a cutie.”

Levi looked at you in disgust. “Hey wait, I’m the one who made the tea and brought it to you. And don’t call the Commander of the Survey Corps a ‘cutie’.”

You grimaced. “You made the tea? That’s kinda creepy.” Levi made a face at that comment.

“Why’s Erwin cute and I’m creepy?” he protested. You made a thinking face.

“Because Erwin’s blonde and tall, and all girls like tall, blonde guys, y’know,” you teased, sipping from the wineskin.

                “That’s stupid,” Levi said bluntly.

                “That’s girls.”

There was a moment of silence, where you both just stared out at the sunset, holding the wineskins at your lap. Glancing at Levi, you tilted your head. “Why do you always come up here?”

You hear him pause, holding his breath. “I like to watch the sun set,” he answered finally. “It would be much better too, if those damn Titans weren’t scrabbling at the wall.” He gestures at the cluster of Titans gaping at you from below. You stare at him, before letting out a breathy laugh.

“Yeah, duh. Silly me,” you said, turning back to see the sun set. For some reason, you feel a sinking feeling in your gut, slightly disappointed. Struggling to stand up with the bulky 3D Manoeuver Gear strapped to your waist, you managed to balance onto your feet again.

Looking up, Levi’s eyes trained onto your 3D Manoeuver Gear. “Hey, did you get that checked up? You said you heard some weird clanking noises the last time you used it.”

You smile. “Nah, I don’t need to. This thing clanks when you just walk with it. Don’t worry about it.” Still, his disapproving, unsure gaze stays on you and your gear, and you roll your eyes. “Look its fine,” you assured, jumping off the wall.

Feeling the wind rush past you for a while, you see Levi peer over the side of the wall, mouth open; probably screaming some reprimand. But you couldn’t hear him as the air whooshed past you fast and loud.

After a second or two, you decided it was enough scaring-Levi time, and more don’t-drop-to-your-death time. Shooting the wires out, they latched out to wall, where you swung towards the stone and stepped off lightly. You hung there, looking like you were sitting on an invisible floating chair, staring up at Levi and grinning.

“See, I’m fine!” you shouted to him.

“Idiot! How are you going to get back up?!” Levi shouted back. You shrugged.

“You’ll figure something out. You’re the Lance Corporal after all.” You didn’t fall very far; if you retracted the wires slowly and climbed up with it, you could probably reach the edge of the wall and lift yourself back up; given that Levi would help you at that point, that is. After all, the hooks were just below the edge; you had almost gotten Levi’s fingers.

Trusting him to pull you up once you got there, you began to retract the wires slowly, scaling the wall slowly but surely. You were almost at the end of the wire when you heard a loud tapping and snap from your 3DMG; from Levi’s face as he looked down at you, you knew he heard it too.

                Crack.

Levi heard it; loud and clear. Coming from [Name]’s 3DMG; the one she never went to fix. He saw it too, the realization dawning on [Name]’s face as she came to the same conclusion; the colour that drained out of her cheeks.

“Just wait there!” he exclaimed, scrambling to get up. “I’ll get someone to help. Don’t move!” Without a second glance, he ran to the nearest soldier, a hundred metres away, looking at his direction. He cursed himself for not bothering to wear his 3DMG on the short walk to the walls.

“Lance Corporal!” the soldier saluted once he got a clear look at Levi’s face. Levi had no time for formalities.

“Give your 3DMG to me! That’s an order!” he shouted, and immediately, the soldier unbuckled all his 3DMG and helped put it on Levi. “Call some soldiers to help too! One of your fellow soldiers has come across a malfunction in her 3DMG,” he ordered, running back to [Name].

Relief washed over him as he saw [Name] still hanging there, pale, but giving him a weak grin.

“Sh*t-head! Why’d you do that?!” Levi shouted. You opened your mouth to speak, but with another crack from your 3DMG, the left wire broke from the bulk, leaving you hanging with your right. Levi could see the stone crumble away from the area around the hook, and all too soon, it was almost all gone.

Jumping down, he latched onto the wall too, landing beside you. But just as he did that, your wire came loose, and you began to fall. Fall into the waiting mouths of the Titans below.

It was like you had been betrayed.

The 3DMG you had trusted for so long had broken on you; partly your fault. And now you were plummeting to your death. Remembering the Titans from before, you unsheathed your swords, spinning around once in the air and shouting a battle cry.

A fleshy cavern of a Titan’s mouth awaited you, and you resigned yourself to the fact you’d only stab its tongue before getting eaten. Might as well go down with a fight.

But an unexpected Titan ran into the one that was awaiting you, milliseconds before you were about to drop into the mouth. Your sword embedded itself into the new Titan, your boots landing heavily on its head. One huge hand swiped at you, and you ducked, but its fingers were still going to reach you; you knew it.

In a blur of metal, the Titan’s fingers were chopped off, and Levi landed a little bit behind you, above the nape of the Titan. Kicking off the bald head, his wires shot out and latched onto the Titan, before retracting, letting his blades slash at the Titan’s nape.

Everything happened so fast. The huge hand that came towards you, the pain in your ribs, the air coming way too slowly, Levi’s shouts, a lifting feeling and the repeating pattern of down, up, down, up.

‘I always get in trouble, don’t I Levi?’

Hey Anxnymous here! This is a Levi reader insert commission for :iconofficial-smiley:, which asked for a 80-point worth two-shot. I hope you stick around for the next part, and forgive me if this seems really sloppy. After all the commissions are done, I promise a whole lot of great fanfictions, okay?
